“If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough.” – Meister Eckhart
“Thank you.”
Maybe these words really are enough.
Certainly “Thank you” is the phrase on my lips today, the emotion in my heart, the words I want to say to you, the prayer of gratitude I offer up to the universe. To every fellow traveler, to everyone who’s read Magical Journey and shared it with a friend, I offer a huge springtime bouquet of thank you’s.
Here’s what we’re creating together:
*Attention.
Nearly three months after the official publication date, People.com cites Magical Journey as a “Memoir We Can’t Put Down.” (I imagine Cheryl Strayed has grown used to such accolades by now, but for me, a shout-out in People is a Really Big Deal.)
Thank you, to senior writer Jill Smolowe, who said she randomly pulled my galley out of a pile during a lull at work and found herself “lured in,” as she wrote me over the weekend.
*Word of mouth sales.
As of last Friday night, Magical Journey was #75 on Amazon’s sales rank in the Biography/Memoir category. Hey, to break through the top-100 ceiling in any category at all is quite a thrill. It means that even in a world crowded with thousands of wonderful books, Magical Journey is quietly but surely finding its way.
Thank you to every book buyer and book giver. Book sales are where the rubber hits the road.
*A Facebook Author page that has grown from exactly zero at pub date to over 4,000 followers!
Thank you to every FB friend who hit that button and is generously sharing my blog posts with your on-line world.
*An eNewsletter mailing list that is multiplying daily.
I remember writing my first blog post, just three and a half years ago, and wondering how on earth anyone would ever find it and who on earth would even care.
When the first subscription from a real live reader ping-ed into my email box, I couldn’t have been more stunned: a human being, reaching back through the ether to ME! Well, we’ve learned a lot together since then, become friends here in this space, discovered just how much we have in common as we share the ups and downs of our lives with one another.
And guess what? My weekly blog post now goes to over 3,000 e-mail boxes. (If you’d like it to land in yours, just click here and subscribe to join us. Of course, it’s free.)
Thank you to all of you who faithful readers, and a special virtual hug to those of you who take the time to comment. (While I had to make the tough decision not to respond to all blog comments, much as I wish I had the time to answer each and every one, I DO read them ALL — gratefully, joyfully.)
*Reader reviews.
Sure, a rave in the New York Times would be great. But it means far more to me to know that my book is striking a chord with you. What a gift, not only to be read, but to have readers who care enough about this book to craft and post a response online. Your reviews touch me deeply. And although I try not to spend my time checking in with Amazon, my two sons keep tabs on those stars. (You are making them proud.)
Thank you for your beautiful words!
*YouTube views (lots of them).
Suddenly, my video for The Gift of an Ordinary Day is flying around the internet again. I can’t compete with Dancing Nana, but at over 1.8 million views and counting, this seems pretty amazing — for a book trailer. The video for Magical Journey, though quieter and more introspective, has been seen by more than 10,000 viewers since January. (Keep sharing!)
*Letters.
Just over two hundred of them since January 8. Each one is unique, heartfelt, appreciated. And taken altogether, what they tell me is this: Sharing the true stories of our lives — the dark, difficult, messy parts right alongside the heartwarming moments and the ah-ha revelations – is worth it. When one person takes a deep breath and reveals a little bit of the struggle, it clears a space in which someone else can be honest and vulnerable, too. And suddenly fear and isolation and confusion are displaced by empathy and compassion and hope. To say I’m grateful for your letters would be an understatement. They make my day — and the stories you entrust to me confirm that though the road may be bumpy at times, none of us journeys alone; this path is full of fellow travelers. We are all in it together.
Thank you for allowing me these glimpses of your lives.
“We can only be said to be alive,” wrote one of my literary heroes, Thornton Wilder, “in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.”
On this mild April Monday, I am feeling deeply alive and grateful for what we are creating and sustaining together: a supportive community of readers and thinkers, wanderers and wonderers, seekers and soul mates.
To express my thanks to you, dear readers, who continue to support my work so generously, I’m gift-wrapping four books this week to give away. (Mother’s Day gift, perhaps??)
My Springtime Gift to You
To enter to win one of four copies of Magical Journey, personalized as per your instructions, wrapped in handmade paper, and mailed with a card to you, or to a special someone in your life, just leave a comment below.
I’d love to know what you’re feeling grateful for as we round the corner into spring. Or, you can just say, “Count me in.” Four winners will be chosen, at random, after midnight on April 9. Good luck to all!

This spring I am grateful for the opportunity to travel to Ethiopia on an advocacy mission trip later this month. This book would make excellent reading on the long journey. Thank you for the chance to win a special copy.

I am grateful for the wonderful spring break I was able to enjoy this past week including the romantic weekend with my husband in St. Joseph, MI. What would teachers do without a little time off?! Back to school and my amazing students tomorrow!

I am grateful for my husband. My soul mate and friend for 44 years. Married for 34 years this Sunday. We lost our beautiful 31 year old daughter 2 years ago and an angel baby 32 years ago. Our son will be 31 this year and I am so grateful for our close relationship. I am grateful that a friend shared your blog with me after my daughter passed away. You have given a voice to my unspoken thoughts and emotions, and have helped me as I continue to process my grief. Thank you!
Beverly Flynn says
A dear friend left us today. A friend each of my five sons loved and knew growing up. Mother to three, their childhood friends, one a teenage romance. Her loss strikes a cord with each of us. For me, the realization again that this life is fleeting, and each day, each ordinary day as you put it, truly is a gift. For my sons, the realization is closer to home that Mom may not be around as long as they have always taken for granted that she would be. Thank you for continuing to channel the energy and emotion that we all feel but fail or lack the ability to express.
Laura Maragnano says
I am overwhelmed with thankfulness for my husband. I KNOW he is praying for me throughout the day. He is supportive and encouraging and absolutely one of the biggest blessings of my life. We have been through some challenging times (blending a family with 10 children and very different ideas on how to raise them can be a bit challenging!)…but we held in there and trusted God that He put us together and would work all things together for His purposes (Romans 8:28). I am so thankful for the Lord’s sustaining strength – so blessed with where we are at this point in our lives. Thankful for my huge family and energetic grandchildren and looking forward to more. But ultimately, so thankful to God that, in HIS timing, which is ALWAYS perfect, I have been given the gift of a committed, believing husband who always points me to God.
Linda F Groff says
I am thankful you were shared with me by a friend….I appreciate the discovery more than you could know.
Thanx…

I am grateful for an Easter trip to visit family, and our safe travels to and fro. Visiting the ocean renewed my soul, but there’s no place like home! Count me in, and thank you.
Ellen Grudzien says
I am eternally grateful for my two children. Having lost my mom at the age of five, Mothers Day always came and went with a great sense of loss. That all changed the when my own children gave me reason to celebrate the day as a mom myself. I practice the gift of each day with them and give light to the journey of healing from the loss of my mom. I would cherish a copy to someday share with them.

Thank you for putting into words what we feel but can’t quite express so eloquently with words. I discovered your Mitten Strings for God when my 13 year old was just a toddler. I read Gift of an Ordinary Day when he was in elementary school. I re-read it recently and I just could not get over how perfectly you described exactly how I was feeling! I have also re-read MItten Strings for God because I have a younger boy who is 6. I thought I wouldn’t be able to relate to Magical Journey because my children are still so much younger than Henry and Jack but that was not true at all. Thank you for another wonderful book!!!
Tracy M. says
Thank you, Katrina, for your appreciation of your readers and the offer to provide several books to a number of people. Count me in! I’m grateful every day for the good people in my life and words. It gives me great joy to read how artfully writers like you can describe what we do on this earth. I’m also grateful today to hear the spring peepers! Hummingbirds will be coming soon…

I am grateful for more than I could ever put into words. My blessings are countless, and each new day is a gift and a chance to embrace all that life has to offer. I am one of the luckiest people on the planet.

Dear Katrina,
Thank you for such an inspiring book full of wonderful thoughtful insights. I could not put the book down. i would love to own my own copy as I borrowed it from the library and have recommended it to many friends. I’m now reading Mitten Strings for God as I have an 8 year old son and was looking forward to some parenting inspiration for these years. I’m a yoga teacher so I particularly loved hearing about your experience at Kripalu. Thank you for sharing your “Magical Journey” with us!
Linda says
I’m feeling grateful for the chance to read the words and feelings from wise women like you… words that resonate and help me find my own way.
Denise Renn says
I am grateful beyond words for my 17 yr old son and my 14 yr old daughter! I am also grateful for Katrina Kenison’s THE GIFT OF AN ORDINARY DAY because it brought to words all my feelings as I enter a new chapter in my life with my children. Thanks Katrina!
Elizabeth Sadhu says
Being on a tight budget right now as we ease into retirement, I would be so delighted to receive your book! BUT knowing that they will go to the most perfect humans! I discovered YOU at the library and read Magical Journey first. AND I LOVE IT! I tell everyone about it. Then I read “The Gift of an Ordinary Day”. I related to SO MANY things.
Anyway, I wallow in gratitude for my abundant (and simple) life. I have a most amazing hubby who keeps me laughing and dancing. I have two best friend children (son and daughter) and I am just blessed.
I have been meditating for 40 years ( I mention this because it helped to make me who I am today) and I AM so so so grateful for all that I AM and all that I have.
much love to you dear Katrina. What a blessing you are to the Universe. YAY for you being you and sharing so beautifully!!!!!

I am incredibly thankful that, when Jesus rebukes me for being arrogant and proudful, and leaning too far on the side of truth that I have lost sight of Grace…that He does it in the most gentle loving manner. And that as soon as I offered up my tearful repentant heart, He bathes me in His love and washes me whiter than snow. Above all, call me blessed!

After many years of training to be a surgeon, due to circumstances I had to retrain to be a Primary Care Physician and am earning far less that what I might have as a surgeon , but on seeing the problems in the life of others whom I see everyday at work and getting to know them, I am deeply grateful for what I have…a loving wife and 3 wonderful little daughters and good health at a time when many of my contemporaries are succuming to ill health. Money is tight and we just about make ends meet, but everyday I get to spend time with my family and have a great work-life balance, and realise that time is fleeting and will never come back and that the moments that I get with my family are priceless.
Kim says
I can not wait to read this book! I am grateful for this new perspective I have, the one that has come from some hard decisions and the work that has gone along with them.

This spring I have so much to be Thankful for because God just continues to Bless me more than I deserve. Most recently my daughter gave birth to my 10th Grandchild the most precious gift that God will ever give you! We brought our little Granddaughter home just in time to celebrate Easter with our family. Indeed what a day of Rejoicing it was!!

I am grateful for the ability to read, to choose what I want to read, and to be able to afford to buy books. These seem like such givens, but they are actually privileges not available to everybody, and I don’t take them for granted.

Namaste Katrina,
Greetings from India !!!
I love your blog and your email in my inbox.
Last Saturday, one of my close friend lost his mom. Its so heart breaking. we were numb for the entire day. what to say? what to do? The only I have gone though is of my pet Dog three years.
So I am grateful for:
1. Both of parents are healthy and young.
2. My younger sister is healthy and happy.
3. My maternal grandparents fighting poverty.
4. My pet parrot surviving his stupid jumps from the third floor. It happened twice. Its a miracle we were able to save him both the times. Last time he got hurt a bit. Thank God he is alive.
5. I am grateful for being single and enjoying my life.
6. I am eternal grateful for everything good, bad and ugly in life.
Take care.
Ekta.

I am grateful for a very special friend…one who believes in me and feels that I can do anything, one who is there through my ups and downs and never passes judgement, one who is always just a text message, a phone call or a drive away, and who makes me a more gracious person just by being a part of my world.

So many blessings to be grateful for this Eastertide season — my husband, my children, my two-year-old granddaughter, my yoga practice and training, my friends and church community. The list is endless, and I am humbled to consider how rich my life is and how often I take it for granted. Thank you for your beautiful writings and your inspiration to all of us.

I am grateful for my children’s curiosity. I had such a magical childhood, filled with the things I take for granted as an adult: creeks and large shade trees and tote bags full of library books. Cookies for dessert and trips to the zoo and rainy days building forts with the couch cushions. My children have given me the gift of experiencing childhood again. My life is enriched for it.
Thank you for this giveaway, Katrina!

I am grateful today for a renewing trip to Florida and to reconnect with family. There is not much else that beats returning to the place you grew up and that oh so beautiful Florida sun. Especially while its still only in the 70s.
More importantly, I am SO very grateful for stumbling upon you, Katrina. I can’t remember how it happened exactly, but after hearing about it somehow, I ordered “Gift of an Ordinary Day” from Amazon (it came in large print, which was funny, because I don’t remember doing that) and then Mitten Strings. And it touched me so, in such a soft place in my heart, that I couldn’t stop telling every mother I ran into about. Even the city worker that was testing our water one day. The reason I am so wholly grateful for coming to find you and your books is that my children are still small enough (5 and 3) for me to really dig in and absorb all the things you speak about. I feel SO grateful for my good fortune! I know that no matter how much I try to purposefully stay present, I will at the end of this road of mothering, still mourn its ending and wish there were things I did differently but after reading these books, there may not be as much mourning or as much regret. Thank you for opening my eyes, ears and more importantly my heart.

-The privilege to house-hunt. Even though our budget feels small, the opportunity to sell a small apartment and find a home in the woods (finger crossed) is real
-Deep gratefulness (and also melancholy about saying goodbye) to my son’s early intervention vision therapist. When she started 2.5 years ago, we didn’t know what he would or could see. There may still be challenges ahead, but watching him in awe of the visual world that is in front of him is an awesome joy that I am glad I have taken a moment to reflect on.
thank you, Katrina, for the reminder to notice my bounty…
Missy K says
Ah, I am so grateful that at 41, I finally feel permission to be myself, and to continue to discover who I a becoming. Your writing has been part of that– that gentle, “Yes, you too” that we all need to hear.
How I’d love to send your book to another woman who is waiting to hear that encouraging voice for herself!
Terri says
I am grateful for the blessings I receive and those I try to give to others every day.

I am grateful for every minute I spend with my son who is growing out of my arms too fast for my taste. I am grateful for the warm weather and the ability to stand in the sunshine.
Amy says
I am currently reading “Mitten Strings for God” and I’m thankful for the reminder to slow down; that not everything has to be rushed; that not everyday has to be go, go, go. I’m grateful that I had a lovely Easter afternoon with my 3-year-old child. He’s at an age where he’s just starting to play on his own and watching him do so, while talking quietly and sometimes singing to himself, made my heart swell with love. Thank you!
Mary says
I’m grateful for the giggles of my 10 year old son and his friend, whom I can hear playing with Legos upstairs.

This spring, I am grateful for the the never ending wonder of the change of seasons…..especially after this past winter that doesn’t seem to want to let go….I love to hear the birds chirping and the buds on the trees coming out…..Being “middle–aged” now – I appreciated the correlation of seasons to life and love the coming alive of Springtime!!!
Lorraine Davidson says
I love all of your books and have given many copies to friends. I even brought “Mitten Strings for God” to Siberia when we adopted our beautiful son in 2001. Can’t wait to read your newest one!

I am incredibly grateful that I am on the road to recovery after battling breast cancer. I read Magical Journey and it (along with surviving breast cancer) has helped me immensely – to slow down and be more present with my 5 year old. I am much more patient, a much better mama. Being off work on sick leave, I spend a whole lot of time with her. I was a good mama before, but now I am a great mama because I take more time to “be present” with her instead of just “being” with her. Thank you so much.

This spring I am thankful that my parents, siblings and I will be getting together for the first time in over 5 years. We have all decided to put down any walls, differences or issues we’ve had with one another and just get together and be a family. Just the six of us, like old times, and we’re having a family portrait taken as well. Just so happy and thankful for this moment!

Congrats on the mention in People! How exciting! It’s been a rough go of things the past few weeks around my house, to be honest. I keep reminding myself that this won’t last forever, and I am grateful that you can count on the inevitability of change. Trying to enjoy the small moments of reprieve, no matter how brief, that each day offers forth. Today, it was a 10 minute doze in the sunshine.

I am grateful for all of the ways my children continue to teach me…my love for them takes my breath away and even though there are difficult days, there are moments every day if I stop long enough to see them – that are truly remarkable in their beauty and simplicity. When I’m having trouble seeing them, I’m so grateful for my autographed copy of Mitten Strings to refer back to and help clean my lens.

I just watched your video and it touched my soul. Your words in combination with your boy’s photos were perfection. I felt as if your thought’s were somehow llifted from my memory vault. Letting go is the hardest part of raising children and the biggest gift you can give to them.
I so appreciate that you take the time to journal and share your thoughts which, it seems, reflect the feelings of so many of us.
All the best,
Kellen says
I am grateful to be alive. On Feb 8, 2012, I suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage. An aneurysm (which I never knew I had) in my brain ruptured. At 42 yrs old I was facing death and leaving behind my 4 children (18,15,14 and 6) and my 2 grand-daughters who live with me (ages at time were 2yrs old and just 2 months old). My family was given a 30% chance of survival. I am here, almost back to my old self. But heck, I’ll take any version of self than none at all. I always thought I took nothing for granted. But after my unfortunate event, everything has new meaning, and I mean everything. I am grateful to see my kids and grandkids every single day, good day or bad day. I am grateful I still have problems to solve, sports events to go to. The realization came to me this past summer when my 6 yr old learned how to swim and I was soooo happy I was still alive to see this. EVERYTHING has special meaning to it now. Do I wish I never got so life-threatening ill? No, because then I would have never realized how important the little day to day things are. Savor everyday and every relationship every chance you get. Kellen

I am grateful for coming through one of the most difficult years of my life! My relationship with my family having been strengthened through it, rather than weakened. I am grateful for the gift of beautiful friendships, for living in view of water, and for knowing how truly loved I am. It’s a beautiful life, even when it isn’t…

I am always amazed at how, even when I don’t open my emailed newsletter right away, I open it at just the right moment. I have to say, there must be something in fate, Katrina, that dictates when I open your emails. Your last post prior to this, nostalgia, hit a chord. I have a 19 year old son. He is drifting between home and leaving home and boy, did your post come at the best time. They grow so quickly but while in the midst of that growing, we can get so caught up we don’t slow down…now it’s slower and I am starting to enjoy the adult he’s becoming, more and more. I would love a chance to win a copy of your book – to add to my collection of those I have read, highlighted, passed on to others and requested back – to see their highlighting or notes in the margins (as I encouraged my sisters and friends to do). Keep up the great inspirational journey for us to follow!

I am grateful for everyday. For the gift of an appreciative heart and a grateful mind! For seeing the beauty of each season may it be summer, fall, winter and spring. Right now I am grateful for the free time to scour my emails and be able to open yours so that I get to enter your drawing as it would be nice to have a free and signed copy of your wonderful book. I am a fan! You don’t know how peaceful and calming your book and blogs makes me. Thanks so much for your writings and for sharing your calming thoughts and life experiences! More power to you!

Firstly, I am new to your blog and books…therefore, I am thankful for the anticipation of a new book in my hand.
Secondly, I’m quite thankful for new beginnings with an open heart. Our son died six years ago, just five days before Christmas. My husband, daughter and I have traveled a long journey to get back to where we where and begin again.
Thirdly, I am abundantly thankful for new beginnings. I’m attempting to start a blog to spur my creativity and reach out to others who have experienced much worse.
And lastly, I am thankful for the unconditional love of my husband and daughter. Thankful for their encouragement as they helped me to face my fears and write…our story – my blog and hopefully a book! <3

I am grateful for my feelings: for the hurt that i am learning to talk about, the fear that I can sit through and the love I can gather up from around me, let pour through me and release anew. I am grateful to be alive at this moment, in this body, sharing and learning, loving and forgiving. I am so grateful that each moment is new, there is always the opportunity to try again, to do it differently. For you and for everyone who speaks from the heart, I am grateful.

Just saw the gift of an ordinary day-so beautifully written! I am facing that empty nest now, only with no husband across the table. Just so grateful to have had the gift of raising my children! As hard as it is I would not change one moment-your writing put all these emotions out there-I too am not alone. Thank you

I have just finished reading (for the second time)” ordinary day”. My son,Jack, is facing the end of his senior year and difficult decisions regarding which college to say “yes, thank you” to in next 2 weeks. I am grateful that he has choices, and that I have discovered your book and blogs to help Me deal with his excitement and my mixed emotions. Perfect timing. Thank you.

I am thankful that while we sometimes find great books to read in faraway bookstores, sometimes books find us. This book found me and I am grateful.

I am most grateful for my happy, healthy family. For my daughter who is about to wrap up her freshman year at college. For my son who will be doing the same with 7th grade. For my husband of more than 25 years. We’re still hanging out together. 🙂
Btw, Magical Journey is right now sitting in my to-read pile on my bedside table. It’s a library copy and I’m not sure I’m going to get to read it before they call it back for the next person on the wait list! Thanks for the chance to win!
